Past summertime, I stood on a picket platform overlooking Anan Creek, my heart racing being a brown bear plunged in to the water just toes away, snatching a salmon with a single swipe. The air smelled of damp moss and fish, plus the Tongass National Forest hummed all around me—a dwelling, respiratory wilderness. This was no normal day excursion.
